"Africa is, indeed, coming into fashion." - Horace Walpole (1774)

I'm now contributing occasional op-eds on DRC politics at Al Jazeera English. My first piece - on what comes next in DRC - is up there now. Many thanks to the editors at Al Jazeera for this opportunity!

Great article Laura, it well written as well as informed. thanks for this and please keep writing about Congo and maybe that will shade some truth and help educate the world about what is going on in that country (this forgotten country with a civil war that claimed over 5 million lives ). The only problem that i see in this article is that if the international community such as chinese and the rest prefer Kabila he should stay ( and this is my read) regardless of what the people want, I would argue the international community encourages him to leave. Also he does not have support in the East as you seem to emply. He was polling at below 10% since the "verbal treaty with Rwanda Paul Kagame although the poll are not reliable as you mentioned in the piece. Being from East Congo, i know that a good majority of Eastern Congolese see that making a treaty with Kagame is like Jews supporting someone who makes a treaty with Hitler. this is obviously not my view but the view from a good majority of people from there. And that is why i think both the Kivu provinces are very hostile to Kabila this election cycle and it will not be accurate to say he is popular in East. Even in his natal province of Lubumbashi he is not as popular.
