"Africa is, indeed, coming into fashion." - Horace Walpole (1774)

your tax dollars at work

So, how 'bout that border fence along the US-Mexico border, built at an average cost to US taxpayers of $4 million/mile?

This film was made by my grad school classmate Roy Germano, who's a visiting assistant professor at the New School. Roy also made a documentary film, The Other Side of Immigration, which is conveniently available for viewing via Netflix.

You know, I really, really try to doublecheck any of my PC tendencies, but I really have to wonder a couple of things about this film. Obviously, the intent was to make the fence look stupid and a waste of money. And it may be. But the choice of asking two 'girls' to climb it to demonstrate this is really quite sexist. Obviously, the intent here was to show,"look how stupid this fence is-even two girls (subtext-weak, incapable, etc) can climb the thing." They are obviously young women with mad climbing skills, and I'm not sure that a whole lot of people, men or women can match their strength and agility.

@stephanie: You are right these 'girls' aka Amazons were obviously picked from the best softball teams in san francisco and were ringers sent by the radical feminist organizations to show thier mexican sisters how it can be done. Thereby also proving the wall works because only young female part girl, part lemur can climb like that and we are safe from Mexican illegals who would steal the secrets of our climbing knowledge, radicalize thier female populace and the next thing ya know we have climbers everywhere!!!
