this & that
- I think I'm going to show this to my students during tomorrow's class (aka, the two-weeks-before-the-paper-is-due smackdown on grammar, usage, and plagarism issues).
- This ad is awesome.
- Here's a photo essay on one of the only mental health clinics in the eastern Congo. Mental health services are probably the top health need in the region at this moment. The population there is incredibly traumatized and there's virtually no tradition of psychological or counseling services.
- Here's an interesting thought on what the pope should've said regarding the spread of HIV/AIDS in Africa.
- The polling experts don't think there was a bias in the polls that incorrectly predicted an Obama win in the New Hampshire primaries of 2008.
- Who'd've thought Baylor would be playing for NIT glory? Here's hoping the game goes better than did the trip to New York City.

Good video to show your students before reminding them that (1) spell check and grammar check are on their computers for a reason and (2) using spell check and grammar check is not an excuse for neglecting to manually PROOFREAD the paper BEFORE turning it in. After all, the professor is smarter than your computer and you WILL catch the mistakes that spell check and grammar check happen to overlook and mark down the paper accordingly . . . [dismounting from soap box] . . . Anyway, good luck with your class!

They liked it. I also had a speaker from the writing center come in to strongly hint that they should have someone who's qualified to do so look over their papers before turning them in.
Believe me, this instructor doesn't take any crap on research papers. Thank goodness I have a TA to handle most of the madness this time around.

Glad to hear your class went well! With a writing center, a T.A., AND the professor at their disposal, your students really don't have any excuses for not getting this right.
