battle's just begun
In Pristina on Saturday, Steve the Lawyer and I were having macchiatos and cherry juice (a regional specialty that is yum, yum, yum!) at the Pi Bar (which is really more of a coffeehouse that sits by the staircase that connects downtown Pristina with the hillside where most diplomats live) when he mentioned that Serbs had occupied the UNMIK courthouse in Mitrovica. Mitrovica is a city in northern Kosovo with a big Serb population where things have been, shall we say, a bit tense since Kosovo declared independence from Serbia a month ago. The occupation of the courthouse was a bad sign and members of the international community in Pristina were worrying about the possibility of a bloody Sunday in Mitrovica.
Well, they made it to Monday. And the clashes in Mitrovica today prove just how hard it will be to maintain Kosovo as a truly multiethnic state.
