"Africa is, indeed, coming into fashion." - Horace Walpole (1774)

let the whining begin!

Ah, the pleas filling my inbox at the end of the semester:

"With my current final grade being an 86 is there ANY possible way to get that 86 up to an A?"

"I am very upset with my grade."

"If there is anything I can do to better my grade before grades have to be in, would you let me know?"

You would be very proud of me. My last (ever) final being tonight, I am on the brink of getting a grade much lower than what I want, much lower than what I feel I deserve, and much lower than I'm used to getting. And I very much wanted to send my prof a note arguing why I think my grade needs some fudging. And yet, I could not bring myself to do it. In part it's pride, and in part it's knowing that I'll look back on it in 6 months in the exact same way you look on it with your students.

Anyway, good luck with your grading!

Good luck with your final, David! And, yeah, I'm much more inclined to be nice to students who leave me alone. Or who make an effort to do something about their grades prior to the day after the final exam. :)

I'm still proud of convincing Dr. Weatherman to change two of my exam grades from B+'s to A-'s in my freshman government class. I like to think it was because I made such a good case for myself, but maybe he was distracted by his pending sabbatical with the Heritage Foundation.
