"Africa is, indeed, coming into fashion." - Horace Walpole (1774)

funny things my students wrote

In my courses, I am beta-testing some materials for an office that works on integrating technology into the classroom experience. As part of that testing, my students take a survey on their experiences with these materials and on what they've learned. These are responses to the question, "What is the most memorable thing up to now you have learned about Texas politics?" (They are not edited for correct content, grammar, or usage.):
  • "That the constitution is pretty much useless and that one of its sole purposes is to make it difficult for the executive branch to have power."
  • "If no one voted, then someone would still be elected and that is kinda disturbing."
  • "Some really strange things go on in Texas."
  • "sodomy is illegal in Texas."
  • "not much of anything interests me."

It's not as bad as you think. The first one is actually fairly accurate - the Texas Constitution, as a document, is a poorly written, disorganized, unweildly mess that is focused on keeping the executive (and government in general) from having much power. If you follow Texas politics, strange things really do happen. The fourth point is wrong; sodomy is legal because of the Lawrence v. Texas decision, and, well, if a kid isn't interested in Texas politics, there's not much that can be done about that.

Ah. I thought the first comment was about the U.S. Constitution and the speaker was a John Yoo, "Unitary Executive" nutcase. Most post-bellum Southern constitutions were written to keep the executive very weak, because Southerners had chafed under the Yankee military governors during Reconstruction.

And I knew about Lawrence v. Texas--one of the many decisions we can expect to be reversed if just one more Scalia type gets on the Supreme Court!
